Why is there so much perfume in a perfume bottle?
quirky asked:
Most perfumes are sold in amounts that no self respecting person could possibly use in the time that the perfume expires, so why put so much in the bottle? Why not sell a smaller, petite version?
Perfume: shelf life between one and two years. Perfume cannot go bad with respect to becoming rancid, but it changes its colour and scent. It depends on the composition of the substances and the storage: the more alcohol the perfume contains, the longer its shelf life. (cheaper stuff) Synthetic substances (cheaper) have a longer life than natural components (expensive stuff). Citrus scents evaporate faster than the scent of wood, for example… Just a few days in the sun can change the perfume completely, so it is better to store it in a cool, dark place.

Because they get you to pay $50 for a large bottle, where they’d only make $20 off of you for a smaller one.

I don’t think perfume expires and if it does have an expiration date, what in it could possibly “expire” or spoil that it cant be used? The perfumes that I wear don’t (have expiration dates or) a large quantity of perfume. I guess the cheaper stuff does?

Actually, most people tend to use it (all) or use keep it for something like a keepsake.
Also, they sell most perfumes in more sizes than you’ll see at a department store.
You can have easy access to the ‘sample’ bottles at Target. They have designer names in itty bitty sizes, usually in a bundle of 4-5 different scents.
Oh, and I’m not sure if perfume actually ‘expires’, but it does start to smell alcohol-y over a (very very very long) period of time.
