What would alcohol or fragrance do to your new tattoo?
Jon T asked:
I just got a new tattoo, and I read alot of articles about tattoo aftercare, there is no definite procedure.
I recently bought Skin Repair by rosken, and it contains alcohol and fragrance. I heard you cant put it on a new tattoo.
Why?

fragrance
hmmm I never heard of this skin repair stuff I used A&D ointment on mine and the color stayed bright and it healed fast too. You should have just bought A&D ointment its safe for your tattoo and it will heal it too.

It can cause the ink to stain the skin in the surrounding area, increase swelling, damage open nerve tissue and cause excessive redness and pain.

Anything with fragrance will BURN LIKE THE FIRES OF HELL. If you want to put lotion on it, get Lubiderm lotion for sensivtive skin, and while it’s healing get some triple antibitotic onintment to put on it.

Your artist should have given you aftercare instructions. If they did not, you should no longer return to that artist, as they are not doing their job properly.
Alcohol and fragrance will dry out the skin and cause harm to the pigmentation of the ink. Your tattoo will dry out faster and the ink will fade fast. You don’t want this. Avoid alcohol and fragrances at all costs. Also avoid any oil-based product. Anything you put on your tattoo should be water-based and fragrance-free.
The aftercare I have also followed is:
- leave the saranwrap on overnight when I get home.
- in the shower the next morning, I gently apply antibacterial soap around the tattoo (but not actually on it) and quickly rinse it off. Soaking your tattoo is a no-no.
- I leave it alone.
- I wash around it again the next morning and after I get out of the shower, I apply unscented Lubriderm to the tattoo and surrounding area.
- I apply the lotion again about mid-day and just before bed. I make sure that I wash my hands thoroughly beforehand.
- I do not touch my tattoo, expose it to sunlight, or pick at it during the rest of the time.
- I continue applying lotion like this for the first two weeks I have it and follow the same cleaning regime.
- I never actually wash the tattoo itself, just the skin around it. This is to make sure that the tattoo is never touched, scabbing isn’t caused to fall off earlier than need be and ink isn’t scrubbed out.
- After two weeks, I just use lotion once a day, every day for the following 30 days.
- Keep it out of hot-tubs, pool, the ocean, sunlight for the first few months. If going in direct sunlight after this time, use a high SPF sunblock liberally and often over the tattoo. This will protect it from fading.

Alcohol causes the tattoo to dry out. I used A&D ointment and washed my tattoo with anti-bacterial soap. After a week or so I started using Eucerin lotion. Good luck!!!
