A cup of baking soda to each load will do it!

White vinegar. It's an antibacterial agent and also helps keep clothes from fading in the wash process. About one cup, with your detergent, to a full load of laundry will kill odors. And no, it doesn't smell like vinegar after it's washed and rinsed.

<a href="http://kansieo.com/members">Caffeinated Content</a>

My friend from Taiwan discovered that local village people near where she's from used salt. No detergent, no softener, no freshener. She went home and tried using the same amount of salt in her wash as she would detergent, and her clothes came out clean, bright, soft and fresh smelling. She washes for four.

I'd imagine that regular use of salt in your washer would be a nightmare on the innards... so you might want to get advice from a local washer service person before doing this on a regular basis (so you don't prematurely corrode your washer).... but it COULD prove to be an inexpensive solution to your problem for the occassoinal "funky" load.

Also, sunshine during the warm months is the best way to kill off any cloth-bound microbes that could cause funkiness. Letting items air-dry in the sun for a day will probably help. The natural oxidization that occurs while this is done will also assist in brightening whites (what Oxyclean basically does).

Hope it works... Good Luck!

Borax, baking soda and washing soda might be options. I've often liked to use Borax in my laundry. While it doesn't add a scent, it's kind of like baking soda in that it gets rid of other odors.
