How to create your own fragrance and sell it?

Francesca M asked:

I was just wondering if someone could give me a detailed answer as to what I should do if I wanted to create a fragrance and sell it for profit. What would be my first step, the steps to follow and how does it work? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It is such a competitive world, perfume.

If the likes of Chanel, Dior, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, don’t put you off trying…

You should probably start by learning scents and notes – aromatherapy will give you some ‘nasal crayons’ with very broad and powerful odours.

You will then have to move into the more refined areas of parfumery with different bases etc – this is akin to chemistry.

If you come up with a scent that you feel is unique, you can try to get a local manufacturer to help with production but, and it’s a biggie:

    the publicity sells the scent

The alternative is offer it to one of the established companies, but this is like dropping a CD at one of the big ‘labels’ for musicians. They get thousands every day.

    Best of luck.

there are probably companies out there that will do it for you – it won;t be free – there are dozens of ingredients in the average bottle of perfume – google – “private label perfume manufacturers”

Here’s a BASIC lesson in perfume making:
Here’s a fragrance wholesale place: (The reviews are very helpful.)
I suggest that you make & sell your perfume on ETSY. It’s a marketplace for handmade items. I’ve purchased many fragrance items there many times. Ebay is good too but I think the listing fees just went up so many of my favorite perfume makers are moving to ETSY:. If you are talking about creating a fragrance for boutiques it can be done (look at the following KAI has) but I’m not sure how.
